Regrowing Eden was part of the Swiss Artists-in-Labs exhibition Lucid Fields at the International Symposium of Electronic Arts in Singapore, ISEA (25.7.-3.8.2008). We performed three times and let our installation in time and space grow.

“In Regrowing Eden we reflect on the manner in which society interacts with nature, and in particular with genetically manipulated plants. With gene-technology, humankind designs new life; nature is artificially created for specific purposes. In our artistic work we examine this concept and investigate the public discussion of this new technology in three countries. In the process we cross the line between artificial and natural and combine installation and performance, scinece and art, Switzerland - Brazil - Vietnam.”

Xin chào! We are in Viet Nam now - the third and last part of our Regrowing Eden-project has begun. The first impression of Hanoi, the Vietnam capital, is incredible and corresponds with its ancient name City of the Soaring Dragon: Pulsating with life, bubbling with commerce, buzzing with motorbikes – a city with a blend of Parisian grace and Asian pace… We expect having mayor difficulties because of the Taifun Lekima, that stroke the country a couple of days ago, leaving some parts of Vietnam with floods, destruction and death. Luckily, Hanoi doesn’t seem to be affected, so we try to set up our project VIET NAM EDEN…

Our installation “transgênicos” grew in four performative interventions. With our artificial “genetically modified organism” we tried to reflect our impression of the political and social discourse on GE/GMO in Brazil. (After our performance Roberto Requião, Governor of Paranà state, invited us for lunch. In opposition to the national policy, the Government of Paranà tries to segregate GMO from Non-GMO streams.)
During our stay in Brazil, we talked to many scientists, artists, NGOs, media and politicians. We gave an extra-performance for 200 government-officials, and as the media of Parana, television and newspaper, was broadcasting our art-project, there were people passing by to have a look. Many visitors of the Museum Oscar Niemeyer in Curitiba have seen our installation and taken our information-flyer - in all, we had very lively discussions about art, science, politics and the pro and contra of GMO. During Eden no Brazil, we experienced the social discourse on GMO as highly political!

Paranagua is the only port within Brasil that wants to segregate GMO from Non-GMO agricultural products like soybean and corn. Parana-state is fighting a fierce juridic battle against the Brasilian national GMO-policy. No other port in Brasil is able to export GMO-free products from its harbours…
