“Regrowing Eden” – artist in labs project
Seit der Vertreibung aus dem Garten Eden sehnt sich der Mensch zurück ins Paradies. Die Gentechnologie erscheint als Möglichkeit, den verlorenen Garten Eden auf Erden wieder zu erschaffen. Nie wieder Hunger, ungeahnte Möglichkeiten für alle Lebensbereiche oder alles umfassende irreversible Schädigungen? Für die einen führt der gentechnologische Weg ins Paradies auf Erden, andere halten Gentechnologie für einen Fehler katastrophalen Ausmasses.
Im Rahmen unseres Artists in Labs-Kunststipendiums „Regrowing Eden“ erarbeiten wir, die beiden Künstler Hina Strüver und Mätti Wüthrich, in den Laboratorien der Eidgenössischen Technischen Hochschule Zürich ETHZ und in verschiedenen Ländern eine künstlerische Abbildung des aktuellen gesellschaftlichen Diskurses um Gentechnologie.
Mit Rauminstallationen und Performances im öffentlichen Raum reflektieren wir die jeweiligen gesellschaftlichen Gentechnik-Diskurse in der Schweiz, Vietnam und Brasilien und arbeiten unsere materiellen Erfahrungen aus den Wissenschafts-Laboratorien künstlerisch auf.
Mit Deiner Hilfe schaffen wir eine Simulation im virtuellen Raum. Hier simulieren wir einen abstrahierten Regrowing Eden-Garten, der sich aus einem online-Fragebogen nährt und die Gentechnik per Computertechnik partizipativ und dynamisch abbildet.

Installationen in der Schweiz, Brasilien und Vietnam
Die Regrowing Eden-Installationen und -Performances sollen in der Schweiz, Vietnam und Brasilien – Länder in denen das Geobotanische Institut der ETH Zürich entsprechende Projekte hat – durchgeführt werden. Pro Land wird es neben der partizipativen Computer-Simulation eine Rauminstallation in einem geschlossenen Raum und eine Performance im öffentlichen Raum geben.
Diese Standorte sind Experimentierflächen und orientieren sich an folgenden Merkmalen:
• Geschlossener Raum: Installation, entspricht White Cube/Laborbedingungen
• Öffentlicher Raum: Performances, entspricht Kunst im öffentlichen Raum/Freisetzungsversuch
• Virtueller Raum: Simulation, entspricht Neue Medien-Kunst/Wissenschaftlichem Computermodell.
Dazu wird ein online-Fragebogen als Fraktalbild/L-System direkt ausgewertet: Deine Meinung zu Gentechnologie als künstlerisches Bild. Die Website dient uns dabei als zentrale Kommunikations- und Interaktionsplattform.
Die Abschlusspräsentation soll einen kritischen Vergleich der verschiedenen Gärten/Diskurse und eine künstlerische Synthese ermöglichen.
Artists in Labs-Kunststipendium
Von März bis November 2007 läuft das „Swiss Artists in Labs“-Programm (AIL). AIL ist eine Kooperation des Schweizer Bundesamtes für Kultur BAK, der Schweizer Kunsthochschule HGKZ, dem Institut Cultural Studis ICS und in unserem Fall der Eidgenössischen Technischen Hochschule ETHZ. Das AIL-Projekt ermöglicht von 2007-2009 jährlich vier Schweizer Kunstschaffenden einen Projektplatz in Schweizer Wissenschaftslabors. Ziel ist unter anderem ein Know-how Transfer zwischen KünstlerInnen und WissenschaftlerInnen.
Mit unserem Projekt Regrowing Eden haben wir Zugang zu einem Laborplatz am Institut für Integrative Biowissenschaften (IBZ) der Eidgenössischen Technischen Hochschule Zürich (ETHZ) gewonnen. Während der 9-monatigen Projektzeit beschäftigen wir uns intensiv mit den materiellen und gesellschaftlichen Aspekten der Gentechnologie. In den Laboratorien der IBZ-Gruppe für ökologische Pflanzengenetik erarbeiten wir uns ein Gefühl für die Materialität von Gentechnologie. Die Mitarbeit bei der GMO-Gruppe für Pflanzenökologie verschafft uns Zugang zu Gentechprojekten in der Schweiz, Vietnam und Brasilien, wo wir u.a. die jeweiligen gesellschaftlichen Diskurse um Gentechnologie erfassen wollen. Durch das Stipendium erhalten wir vertiefte Einblicke in das Thema Gentechnologie – und auch wie kontrovers Gentechnologie in der Wissenschaft aber auch allgemein weltweit diskutiert wird.

Was wir wollen
In unserer Projektarbeit legen wir Wert auf die künstlerische Ausformulierung der Gärten, die sinnlichen Erfahrbarkeit des gesellschaftlichen Diskurses in verschiedenen Formen sowie die Interaktion mit verschiedenen gesellschaftlichen Zielgruppen in jeder Projektphase. Vorgängig erarbeiten wir in den ETH-Laboratorien die Grundlagen der Gentechnik und deren Risikoforschung.
Im Juni 2007 werden wir mit einer performativen Rauminstallation die Regrowing Eden-Serie eröffnen und während drei Wochen mit einer subtilen, dynamisch regressiv bis invasiv wachsenden Rauminstallation den ETH-Lichthof in Zürich (Gebäude CHN) bespielen. Es folgen Performances und Installationen in Brasilien (August 2007) und Vietnam (Oktober 2007). Das Projekt soll mit einer Rauminstallation und Performance anläßlich der 20 Jahre ETH Umweltnaturwissenschaften-Feier (November 2007) abgeschlossen werden.
Wer wir sind
Hina Strüver hat eine Kunstausbildung an der Hochschule für Bildende Künste in Braunschweig mit Schwerpunkt Objektkunst, Installation und Performance abgeschlossen. Nach dem Master in Fine Arts folgten verschieden Kunstprojekte und Stipendien.
Mätti Wüthrich hat Umweltnaturwissenschaften an der ETHZ studiert. Seither bewegt er sich performativ als Aktionskünstler und Campaigner vorwiegend in einem politisch-künstlerischen Spannungsfeld.

“Regrowing Eden” – artist in labs project
Ever since human beings were expelled from Garden Eden, the longing for paradise remained. Gen-technology seems to be a possibility to rebuild Garden Eden on Earth. For some GMO is a way back to paradise on Earth, for others just another doom of temptation with broad adverse effects. The project attempts to make a performative artistic mapping of the actual scientific and social discourse.
In our Artists in Labs art scholarship “Regrowing Eden“ we, the artists Hina Strüver and Mätti Wüthrich, will develop an artistic representation of the current scientific and social discourse on genetic engineering, through our exchange with the laboratories of the Swiss Institute of Technology ETHZ and with various countries. Our installations, performances and computer simulations will reflect the current debates in Switzerland, Vietnam and Brazil, and interpret our experiences in the scientific laboratories in an artistic way.

Installations in Switzerland, Brasil and Vietnam
The Regrowing Eden installations and performances will take place in Switzerland, Vietnam and Brazil – countries in which the Institute of Integrative Biology of the Swiss Federal Institute of Technology Zurich is carrying out capacity building and projects on environmental risk assessment of genetically modified organisms. In each country we will perform installations in an enclosed space and a public space, as well as the participatory computer simulation. These spaces correspond to areas of scientific experiment:
- Closed space: installation in an inner room; represents a „white cube“ laboratory environment without interaction with the outside environment.
- Public space: temporary performances, art in public spaces; corresponds to a field experiment with interaction with the surrounding environment.
- Virtual space: long term simulation, using new media art; corresponds to scientific modelling, allows interactions in cyberspace.
An online questionnaire is evaluated in the form of a fractal image/Lindenmayer-system: “your opinion on genetic engineering as an artistic picture“. At the same time, the website is a central communication and interaction platform.The final results will allow a comparison of the different gardens/debates within the countires and create an artistic synthesis.
Artists in Labs-scholarship
The Swiss Artists in Labs (AIL) Program in 2007, running from March to November, is a cooperative activity of the Swiss Federal Office of Culture (BAK) , the Swiss College of Art and Design (HGKZ) , the Institute of Cultural Studies (ICS) , and the collaborating scientific institutions: in our case the Swiss Federal Institute of Technology Zurich (ETHZ) . From 2007 to 2009, the AIL project will enable four swiss artists a year to undertake a placement in a swiss laboratory. The project goal is an exchange of artistic and scientific experiences.
With our “Regrowing Eden“ project we have gained a place in the laboratory of the Institute of Integrative Biology (IBZ ETHZ) . During the 9-month project we will occupy ourselves intensively with the scientific and social aspects of genetic engineering and the assessment of the associated risks. In the labs of the IBZ Plant Ecology Group we are gaining a feel for the physical and biological reality of genetic engineering. Our cooperation with the GMO ERA Project and other projects of the GMO group in the IBZ gives us access to projects on environmental risk assessment of GM plants in Switzerland, Vietnam and Brazil, where we aim to capture the different scientific and social discourses around genetic engineering. During the scholarship we will gain a more profound insight into genetic engineering and assessment of its risks – and also see how controversely genetic engineering is discussed within scientific circles and in the wider public worldwide.
What we want to achieve
Our project work emphasises the artistic interpretation of the gardens, the translation of the scientific and public debate into objects that can be directly experienced in different forms. During June we will initiate “Regrowing Eden“ with a series of performative room installations over three weeks in the central atrium of the ETHZ CHN building in Zurich, Switzerland. The installations will fill the space in subtly playful dynamic growth. Further installations will be performed in Brazil in August 2007 and in Vietnam in October 2007. In November 2007 the project will be closed with a room installation and performance to mark the ETH Department of Environmental Sciences 20th anniversary event. The final installation will represent a comparison of the different gardens / debates and create an artistic synthesis.
Who we are
Hina Strüver has a Master of Fine Arts from Braunschweig University of Art, with majors in object art, installation and performance. Since completing her Masters degree she has carried out various art projects and scholarships in a number of countries.
Mätti Wüthrich graduated in Environmental Sciences at the Swiss Federal Institute of Technology Zurich. His path since as performance artist has traced the line between science, environmental politics and art.

“Regrowing Eden” (Reconstruindo o Eden) – Projeto artistas em laboratórios
Desde que os seres humanos foram expulsos do Jardim de Eden, as saudades do paraíso permaneceram. A tecnologia genética parece ser uma possibilidade de reconstruir o Jardim de Eden na Terra. Para alguns os GMOs são um caminho de volta ao paraíso na Terra, para outros são apenas mais um atrativo da tentação com efeitos adversos amplos.
Em nossa bolsa de estudos para artistas em laboratórios (Artists in Labs), Regrowing Eden, os artistas Hina Strüver e Mätti Wüthrich, irão desenvolver uma representação artística do atual discurso científico e social sobre a engenharia genética, em nossa troca com os laboratórios do Swiss Institute of Technology (ETHZ) e com vários países. Nossas instalações, performances e simulações de computador (installations, performances and computer simulations) irão refletir os debates atuais na Suíça, Vietnã e Brasil, e interpretar nossas experiências dos laboratórios científicos de uma forma artística.

Instalações na Suíça, Brasil e Vietnã
As instalações do Regrowing Eden e as performaçes tomarão lugar na Suíça, no Brasil e no Vietnã – países em que o Institute of Integrative Biology of the Swiss Federal Institute of Technology Zurich está instalando projetos sobre a avaliação dos riscos ambientais vindos dos transgenicos. Em cada país nós iremos fazer instalações em lugares fechados e em um lugares públicos, também usaremos a simulação de computador. Estes espaços correspondem a áreas de experimentação científica:
- Espaço fechado: instalação em uma sala interna; representa um ambiente de laboratório do tipo “cubo branco” sem interação com o ambiente natural.
- Espaço público: performances temporárias, arte em espaços públicos; corresponte a um experimento de campo com interação com o ambiente que cerca.
- Espaço virtual: Simulação de longa duração, usando uma nova arte digital; corresponde a modelação científica, permite interações no ciberespaço.
Um questionário on-line (online questionnaire) é avaliado na forma de uma imagem fractal/sistema de Lindenmayer: “sua opinião sobre engenharia genética na forma de uma figura artística“. Ao mesmo tempo, o website pé uma central de comunicação e como uma plataforma de interação. Os resultados finais permitiram uma comparação entre diferentes campos/debates dos países e a criar uma síntese artística.
Bolsa de estudos para Artistas em Laboratórios
O programa Swiss Artists in Labs (AIL) de 2007, em curso de Março a Novembro, é uma atividade cooperativa do Swiss Federal Office of Culture (BAK), a Swiss College of Art and Design (HGKZ), o Institute of Cultural Studies (ICS), e as instituições científicas colaboradoras: em nosso caso o Swiss Federal Institute of Technology Zurich (ETHZ). De 2007 à 2009, o projeto AIL irá permitir quatro artistas suíços por ano à ter uma colocação em um laboratório suíço. A meta do projeto é uma troca de experiências artísticas e científicas.
Com nosso projeto “Regrowing Eden“ nós ganhamos um lugar no laboratório do de Institute of Integrative Biology (IBZ ETHZ). Durante o projeto de 9 meses nós iremos nos ocupar intensivamente com os aspectos científicos e sociais da engenharia genética e com a avaliação dos riscos associados a ela. Nos laboratórios da IBZ Plant Ecology Group nós estamos tento uma noção da realidade física e biológica da engenharia genética. Nossa cooperação com o projato GMO ERA e outros projetos do grupo GMO no IBZ nos dá acesso a projetos sobre avaliação dos riscos ambientais das plantas GM na Suíça, Brasil e Vietnã, onde nós pretendemos capturar os diferentes discursos científicos e sociais sobre a engenharia genética. Durante a bolsa de estudos nós ganharemos uma visão mais profunda da engenharia genética e na avaliação dos riscos – e também veremos o quanto a engenharia genética é controversa e discutida nos meios científicos e no publico em geral em todo mundo.

O que nós queremos alcançar
Nosso projeto dá ênfase na interpretação artística dos jardins, a tradução do debate científico e público em objetos que podem ser diretamente experimentados em formas diferentes. Durante junho nós iniciaremos o “Regrowing Eden” com uma série de instalações performáticas em salas durante três semanas no coração do prédio da ETHZ CHN em Zurique, Suíça. As instalações irão preencher o espaço com um crescimento dinâmico e sutil. Mais instalações serão feitas no Brasil em agosto de 2007 e no Vietnã em outubro de 2007. Em novembro de 2007 o projeto será comcluído com uma instalação e uma performance para comemorar o 20 aniversário do ETH Department of Environmental Sciences. A instalação final representará uma comparação dos diferentes campos/debates e criará uma síntese artística.
Quem nós somos
Hina Strüver é Mestrada em Belas Artes na Universidade de arte de Braunschweig, com experiência em objetos, instalações e performances. Desde que completou seu mestrado ela tem feito vários projetos de arte e bolsas de estudo em vários países.
Mätti Wüthrich graduado em Ciência Ambiental no Instituto Suíço de Tecnologia de Zurique. Desde então suas experiências como artista performático foi traçada na fina linha entre a ciência, política ambiental e arte.

Chúng tôi, Hina và Mätti, là các nghệ sỹ người Thuỵ sỹ mang theo nền tảng khoa học. Nhờ có học bổng – „Artists in labs“ chúng tôi hiện có mặt tại Việt nam. Trong dự án quốc tế „Regrowing Eden“ của mình chúng tôi làm đề tài Công nghệ sinh học/ công nghệ gien. Trong công trình nghệ thuật của mình chúng tôi muốn phản ánh về thái độ của xã hội đối với thiên nhiên , đặc biệt đối với các loại cây công nghệ sinh học và biến đổi gien. Để làm việc này chúng tôi đã phát triển việc trình diễn (Performances) và sắp đặt nghệ thuật . Chúng tôi đã thực hiện dự án này tại Thuỵ sỹ (tháng 6. 2007), Brazin (tháng 8. 2007) và sẽ thực hiện tại Việt nam (tháng 10. 2007).
Swiss Artists-in-Labs:
Năm 2007 chúng tôi đã giành được học bổng – „Artists in Labs“ (nghệ sỹ trong phòng thí nghiệm). Chương trình – „Artists in labs“ là sự hợp tác giữa Cục Liên bang về Văn hoá của Thuỵ sỹ (BAK), trường Cao đẳng nghệ thuật Zürich (HGKZ) và trường Đại học kỹ thuật Thuỵ sỹ (ETHZ). Một trong những mục tiêu là sự trao đổi – tri thức giữa nghệ thuật và khoa học về những vấn đề quan trọng đối với xã hội.
Hina Strüver được đào tạo về nghệ thuật tại trường Cao đẳng về nghệ thuật tạo hình ở Braunschweig với các trọng tâm về nghệ thuật cụ thể, nghệ thuật sắp đặt và nghệ thuật thể hiện. Sau khi trở thành Master về Mỹ thuật chị đã thực hiện nhiều dự án nghệ thuật khác nhau và nhận được một số học bổng. www.hina.de
Mätti Wüthrich đã học về khoa học Môi trường tại trường Cao đẳng kỹ thuật Zürich. Sau khi ra trường anh hoạt động với tư cách nghệ sỹ hành động chủ yếu trong môi trường đan xen giữa nghệ thuật sắp đặt và nghệ thuật trình diễn (Performance) trên địa bàn công cộng.
